This world tree is an Oriental plane and is called 'De Plantage Plataan' because of its location in the park "De Plantage" in Schiedam.
This plane tree was planted around 1870. A plane tree is tough both in terms of condition and wood properties. There is a good chance that this tree will live to be more than five hundred years old. The organizations involved are: the municipality of Schiedam, the Wereldboom Foundation and the interests and residents' association 'De Plantage'.

General information
Park 'De Plantage' is the oldest city park in the Netherlands based on the purpose for which it was founded; At the time of construction, this was already a public city park intended to provide the residents of the heavily polluted medieval city center with a place for recreation and fresh air. It was then just outside the city walls. Today it is located in the center of the strongly grown city. The park is surrounded all around with houses, all of which turn their front to the park.

The space around the tree is financed by residents and furnished by themselves. the most striking element is a huge hammock that makes it possible to enjoy the imposing mottled main branches that form the crown. Some steel cables connecting the main branches date from the time of tree surgery. The hammock and the crown are illuminated at night. Many people use the hammock or meet by the tree.

Until five years ago, the tree stood at the edge of a parking lot that cut through the park. When the park was redesigned, the 1930 cut was undone and the tree's growing area was expanded by 400 m3.
