This is the site of a mediaeval bridge which used to serve the Abbey. It was replaced in 1763 to accommodate the new turnpike road system; this bridge was widened in 1860 to carry increased traffic following the opening of the Great Western Railway station nearby.
The River Tavy is known to be the fastest rising river, although I haven't seen it myself I have been told the river reaches to top of the banks after a very heavy rainfall on Dartmoor.
