On 26 August 1778, on the initiative of Baron Žiga Zois, the following Bohinj men climbed to the top of Triglav "for the first time since the world has been standing": miners Luka Korošec and Matevž Kos, hunter Štefan Rožic and ranch colonel Lovrenc Willomitzer.
The ascent of the 2864 m high peak was made 8 years before the first ascent of Mont Blanc and 22 years before the first ascent of the Great Klek (Grossglockner), and was an honourable feat for those times. They stayed on the summit for two hours and carved the initials of their names and those of Žige Zois and the French naturalist and mountaineer Balthasar Hacquet (who had unsuccessfully attempted the summit the year before) into the rock. Over the centuries, Triglav has established itself as a Slovenian national symbol, and the legend of its conquerors, the Four Hearted Men, has become ingrained in the Slovenian national consciousness.

The monument is 2864 mm high, a thousand times smaller than Triglav.

The monument in Ribcev Laz, the work of sculptor Stojan Batic, was erected to mark the bicentenary of the first ascent of Triglav.

Na pobudo barona Žige Zoisa so se 26. avgusta 1778 na vrh Triglava »prvic, odkar svet stoji« povzpeli širje Bohinjci: rudarja Luka Korošec in Matevž Kos, lovec Štefan Rožic in ranocelnik Lovrenc Willomitzer.
Vzpon na 2864 m visoki vrh je bil opravljen 8 let pred prvim vzponom na Mont Blanc in 22 let pred prvim vzponom na Veliki Klek (Grossglockner) in je bil za takratne case spoštljiv podvig. Na vrhu so ostali dve uri in v skalo vklesali zacetnice svojih imen ter imen Žige Zoisa in francoskega naravoslovca in gornika Balthasarja Hacqueta (ki se je na vrh neuspešno skušal povzpeti leto prej). Triglav se je v stoletjih utrdil kot slovenski nacionalni simbol, legenda o njegovih osvajalcih, štirih srcnih možeh, pa se je vtkala v slovensko narodno zavest.
Spomenik je visok 2864 mm, torej tisockrat manj kot Triglav.

Spomenik v Ribcevem Lazu, delo kiparja Stojana Batica, je bil postavljen ob dvestoletnici prvega vzpona na Triglav.
