"Don Juan Tenorio: religious-fantastic drama in two parts is a romantic drama published in 1844 by José Zorrilla . It constitutes, together with El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra (1630), attributed to Tirso de Molina and to which Don Juan Tenorio is indebted, one of the two main literary materializations in Spanish of the myth of Don Juan

The action takes place in Seville in 1545, in the last years of King Carlos I of Spain . It is divided into two parts."

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
"Part one
The play takes place on the night of Carnival. Some time ago don Juan and don Luis Mejía had made a double bet, which was about «who of the two knew how to act worse, with better fortune, in the term of a year» and «who of the two fought in more duels and who seduced more maidens». The story begins a year after that bet, therefore, Don Luis Mejía and Don Juan meet again at the Laurel de Buttarelli inn, in Seville, where they compare their exploits.

The bet has become a big scandal in Seville, however, nobody knows for sure what happens. During the night, they arrive at the Hostería del Laurel, Buttarelli's property, in search of knowing in depth the details of said ceremony.

Don Gonzalo, father of Doña Inés, has found out about the bet, and goes to the inn to make sure of what he has heard. Similarly don Diego, father of don Juan, wants to see "the monster of lightness to whom I could give being."

The rivals count the dead in battle (Don Luis 23, Don Juan 32) and the seduced women (Don Luis 56, Don Juan 72), at the end Don Juan remains the winner, however Don Luis challenges him again telling Don Juan that what is missing from the list is “a novice who is ready to profess”, then Don Juan again bets Don Luis that he will conquer a novice, and that he will also take away his fiancée, Doña Ana de Pantoja.

Don Luis, at the words of the other, sends his servant, Gastón, to warn the justice; while don Juan does the same with Ciutti.

Hearing the challenge, Commander Don Gonzalo de Ulloa, father of Doña Inés, who had been in a convent since her childhood and was destined to marry Don Juan, undoes the arranged marriage.

Two rounds of bailiffs arrive at the inn and place the two noblemen under arrest.

Don Luis manages to get out of jail and goes with Doña Ana to beg her to stand firm before Don Juan, who will go after her. Don Juan also comes out, and on the street outside Doña Ana's house, he has Don Luis locked up. Later, he talks with Brígida, the convent's devout woman, who explains how to enter the convent without being seen.

Don Juan's last action, to secure the bet, is to call Lucía, doña Ana's servant, to ask her to open the doors of the house in exchange for money and at ten o'clock at night. Lucia agrees.

Meanwhile, Doña Inés reads a letter from Don Juan, in which he openly declares his love for her. When he has finished, don Juan enters her cell, causing her to pass out. Don Juan takes her and takes her to her house. Don Gonzalo arrives some time later, to tell the mother abbess that the owner of Doña Inés has been bought, and he fears for her well-being. Then the turnera sister appears, announcing the disappearance of Doña Inés.

In Don Juan's house, Doña Inés falls into the gallant's nets. United by their love, they are ready for anything. At that moment, don Luis arrives, wanting to kill don Juan. Almost afterwards, Don Gonzalo arrives, with armed men. Don Juan sends don Luis to an adjoining room to wait.

Don Juan humiliates himself before don Gonzalo, begging him to grant him his daughter in exchange for evidence that he himself has. Don Gonzalo refuses. Don Luis leaves the room and tries to ally himself with the commander to kill don Juan, but finally the latter turns out to be the murderer, shooting don Gonzalo and stabbing don Luis.

Don Juan flees Seville in a brigantine towards Italy.

Second part
Five years after the previous action, Don Juan returns to Seville, looking for the old palace of the Tenorio family and finding in its place the cemetery where Don Luis and the Commander are buried, in addition to the rest of the victims killed at the hands of the. While admiring the statues, don Juan discovers an unexpected tomb, that of doña Inés (who had died of grief upon understanding that she and don Juan could never be together despite loving each other deeply).

Centellas and Avellaneda arrive at the place, the presence of these two old friends makes don Juan invite them to his house to have dinner together with the spirit of don Gonzalo, from where the idea of ??having based Zorrilla on Tirso's The Stone Guest comes from . Mill. Later, while they are having dinner, a knock sounds and the specter of the Commander appears, who comes with the aim of leading don Juan to hell. However, Doña Inés intercedes and manages to get both of them to go to Heaven between an apotheosis of angels and heavenly songs.

Places where the play has action
Hostería del Laurel : it is the tavern where don Juan and don Luis had agreed to meet a year after their bet. It is where almost the entire Act I of the play takes place and is owned by Cristófano Buttarelli.
Street of Doña Ana's house : it is there where Don Luis Mejía asks Doña Ana to allow him access to the interior of her residence to defend his virtue against Don Juan's pretensions. In this street don Luis is locked in a cellar, allowing don Juan to carry out his part of the bet.
Convent of the Virgin : where Doña Inés has been confined since her birth. That is where Inés reads don Juan's letter and faints when she sees him enter unexpectedly.
Quinta de don Juan : Doña Inés is taken there and don Juan declares his love for her. In this house don Juan kills don Gonzalo de Ulloa and don Luis Mejía.
Pantheon/cemetery : Don Diego Tenorio's house converted into a pantheon. There don Juan meets the sculptor of the statues and intimidates him into giving him the keys to the statues. Certain supernatural events also happen in this place, such as statues coming to life, shadows speaking, etc.
Casa de don Juan : Avellaneda and Centellas are invited to dinner there and it is where the ghost of don Gonzalo appears to them, who warns don Juan that he has only one day left to live and if he does not repent, he will be taken to hell; the specter of Doña Inés will also materialize. Finally, there Don Juan will be assassinated by Captain Centellas.
Romantic characteristics
Dark places : a dark, lonely place is used in this work, such as the cemetery, where the sculptures come to life.
Impossible Love : There is an impossible love between Don Juan and Doña Inés. The impossible love that arises makes Doña Inés die of sorrow, because Juan and she cannot be together because Don Juan had to flee to Italy after killing Don Gonzalo and Don Luis who, even dead, persecute him.
The protagonists : the hero is from a noble family and is a lonely man and skull, typical of his time; Contrary to medieval tradition, embodied by Don Gonzalo. The heroine fits all canons, both physical and spiritual, and represents Christian innocence and virtue.
Tragic ending: the death of the two lovers marks the unfortunate outcome.
Dynamic nature : in this work, the actions usually occur almost always at night.
Mystery : the statues come to life, the shadows speak, an idealized idea of ??heaven and hell is given.
Predominance of feeling over reason : Doña Inés was really in love with don Juan and tried to avoid any feeling she had towards him.
Love and repentance : a sinner is saved by the love of a woman, at the end of the play when don Juan is saved thanks to doña Inés and, moreover, at the end he repents, which is also typical.
Others : street fights and use of masks.
