De grot is prachtig gelegen op het eind van een lange dreef.

Naast de Lourdesgrot in de gastentuin is de grot in het bos de meest bekende. Onder de oorlog 1914-1918 lag de abdij vlak achter het front, zij was omgezet in een kazerne, eerst van het Franse leger, daarna vooral door de Engelsen, en ten slotte door het Belgisch leger; er was een kamp van Engelse soldaten vlak achter de gebouwen, en een barakkenhospitaal een weinig verder. Toch had zij slechts zeer geringe schade te lijden, en er was maar één gasalarm, maar ook dat bleef zonder ernstige gevolgen. In die omstandigheden werd het idee van de grot geboren: “Tijdens de oorlogsjaren had hij ( Dom Bonaventura ) beloofd, ter ere van Maria, de Koningin van den Vrede, een ‘grot van Lourdes’ op te richten, zo de abdij van vernieling gespaard zou blijven. Daar zijn wens ten volle verhoord was geworden, moest hij ook zijn gelofte vervullen”
Op aanvraag van Dom Bonaventura liet Dom Henricus Kuypers, abt van de abdij Rochefort, zijn monniken de nodige bergstenen zoeken in hun bossen en naar hier overbrengen. “ En Dom Bonaventura met een paar Paters en Broeders toog aan ’t werk…”. De eigenlijke grot was voltooid op het einde van 1921. En nu staat zij daar…als een blijvend monument van dankbaarheid, opgericht ter ere van de Koningin van den Vrede: Divinae reginae pacis, bello finito, constructum”. (1921) Zij kon worden ingezegend op 28 mei 1922. In 1923 werden in een rondgang rond de grot nog Staties van de VII Weeën van O. L. Vrouw, aangebracht, beeldhouwwerk van artist Demey uit St. Denys Westrem. En in 1929 werd hieraan nog “een stenen predikstoel” toegevoegd.
Het werd een druk bezochte grot, zowel individueel het hele jaar door, als door groepen en parochies, vooral in de meimaand. Zij werd in 1968 overgemaakt aan de parochie Westvleteren, die er in de meimaand bedevaarten organiseert.

Apart from the Lourdes grotto in the guest garden, the grotto in the woods is the most famous. During the 1914-1918 war, the abbey was situated right behind the front, it was converted into barracks, first of all by the French army, then mainly by the English, and finally by the Belgian army; there was a camp of English soldiers right behind the buildings, and a barracks hospital a little further on. Yet it suffered only very little damage, and there was only one gas alarm, but even that remained without serious consequences. In these circumstances, the idea of the grotto was born: "During the war years, he (Dom Bonaventura) had promised to erect, in honour of Mary, the Queen of Peace, a 'grotto of Lourdes', if the abbey would be spared from destruction. Since his wish had been fully granted, he also had to fulfil his vow".
At the request of Dom Bonaventura, Dom Henricus Kuypers, Abbot of Rochefort Abbey, had his monks find the necessary mountain stones in their forests and bring them here. "And Dom Bonaventura, with a few Fathers and Brothers, set to work...". The actual cave was completed at the end of 1921. And now it stands there...as a lasting monument of gratitude, erected in honour of the Queen of Peace: Divinae reginae pacis, bello finito, constructum". (1921) It could be consecrated on 28 May 1922. In 1923, in a roundabout way around the grotto, Stations of the VII Sorrows of Our Lady, sculptures of artist Demey from St. Denys Westrem were added. And in 1929 "a stone pulpit" was added.
It became a much-visited grotto, both individually throughout the year, as well as by groups and parishes, especially in the month of May. In 1968 it was transferred to the Westvleteren parish, which organises pilgrimages there in the month of May.
