Here is the start of a 5 km long aquaduct made by the Romans. They drilled for water at this point which was lead to through
channels, tunnels, dams and wooden gutters to Nijmegen.

"East of Nijmegen is the lovely village of Berg en Dal. Berg en Dal is located in a wonderful area with un-Dutch differences in height. The Romans eagerly took advantage of this landscape: here they drilled for water for their army camps and built an aqueduct to channel that water to Nijmegen with great precision.
This water pipe consisted of a wooden gutter. That gutter ran through three excavated valleys (Kerstendal, Louisedal and Mariënbosch) and over three dams (Swartendijk, Cortendijk and Broerdijk). Nothing has been found of the wooden gutter, but the valleys and dams are still hidden in the landscape, as an impressive heritage of Roman engineering. Together they form the largest Roman monument in the Netherlands."
