"On 1 November 1883 Vincent van Gogh traveled with one Hendrik Scholte, who was on his way to the annual fair in Assen, and they agreed to pick him up again on the way back.
Van Gogh was eager to go to Zweeloo because he had heard that Max Liebermann and other painters were also there. Once in Zweeloo, he discovered that they were only there during the summer half-year. This was a great disappointment, but in the letter he wrote to his brother in Paris, he praised the beautiful surroundings. Van Gogh had little choice but to spend the day in Zweeloo and wait to be picked up by Scholte. In the meantime he drew, among other things, the Church of Zweeloo."
