NL Uit archeologisch bureauonderzoek weet ik dat het pand van het kiprestaurant Juffrouw Tok te Ede vroeger een herberg/pension was, Zuid-Ginkel. Ik heb op delpher.nl een hele oude advertentie van dit etablissement gevonden, van de Telegraaf van 17 april 1913. Er waren toen ‘frische kamers’, een ‘boschrijke omgeving’ en je kon er een rijtuig huren.

Over de geschiedenis van de Herberg Zuid Ginkel is, evenals over het gebied De Ginkel, weinig bekend. Het huidige gebouw is volgens de kadastrale leggers in 1857-1858 gebouwd. Hoewel het kadaster ter plaatse voor 1857 slechts heide vermeldt, blijkt uit een oude, op het gemeentearchief van Ede aanwezige kaart, dat er wel eerdere bebouwing was. Er heeft voordien op ongeveer dezelfde plaats een boerderij gestaan die de naam 'Ginkel' droeg. Deze Ginkel komt reeds vanaf 1682 regelmatig in archiefstukken voor. Dit is misschien ook de verklaring voor de naam 'Zuid Ginkel' van het huidige gebouw.

Zuid Ginkel ligt aan de weg naar Arnhem (Oude Rijksweg / N224); dit is een oude Hessenweg. Deze handelsweg is vermoedelijk in de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw ontstaan. Ter plekke kruist deze weg een eeuwenoude Hessenweg en het is dus begrijpelijk dat op dit knooppunt een pleisterplaats ontstond. Wanneer dit was, is niet te achterhalen. Ten tijde van de bouw van de herberg was het landgoed Ginkel in het bezit van Gerard Duuring, koffiehandelaar te Rotterdam. Nadat het bezit een aantal malen van eigenaar gewisseld was, werd de boerderij/herberg in 1935 door Jacobus W. Schlimmer (groot grondbezitter op de Veluwe) verkocht aan Jan Kramer (hij moet al een hele tijd de zaak hebben gerund want zijn naam staat onder de advertentie uit 1913). Nadien is het café nog enkele keren van eigenaar verwisseld.

I found a very old advertisement for this establishment on delpher.nl, from the Telegraaf of April 17, 1913. There were then 'fresh rooms', a 'wooded environment' and you could rent a carriage.

Little is known about the history of Herberg Zuid Ginkel, as well as about the De Ginkel area. The current building was built in 1857-1858 according to the cadastral records. Although the local land register only mentions heath before 1857, an old map in the municipal archives of Ede shows that there were earlier buildings. There used to be a farm called 'Ginkel' on roughly the same spot. This Ginkel appears regularly in archive documents from 1682 onwards. This may also explain the name 'Zuid Ginkel' of the current building.

Zuid Ginkel is located on the road to Arnhem (Oude Rijksweg / N224); this is an old Hessenweg. This trade route probably originated in the second half of the 17th century. On the spot, this road crosses an ancient Hessenweg and it is therefore understandable that a stopping place arose at this junction. It is unknown when this was. At the time of the construction of the inn, the Ginkel estate was owned by Gerard Duuring, coffee trader in Rotterdam. After the ownership had changed several times, the farm/inn was sold in 1935 by Jacobus W. Schlimmer (large landowner on the Veluwe) to Jan Kramer (he must have been running the business for a long time because his name is under the 1913 ad). The cafe has since changed hands a few times.
