"Denis Diderot, born October 5, 1713 in Langres and died July 31, 1784 in Paris, was a French writer, philosopher and encyclopaedist of the Enlightenment., novelist, playwright, storyteller, essayist, dialogue writer, art critic, critic writer and translator.

Diderot is recognized for his erudition, his critical spirit and a certain genius. He left his mark on the history of all the literary genres in which he tried his hand: he laid the foundations of bourgeois drama in the theatre, revolutionized the novel with Jacques le Fataliste and his master, invented criticism through his Salons and supervised the writing of one of the most outstanding works of his century, the famous Encyclopédie. In philosophy too, Diderot stands out by offering more material for the reader's independent reasoning rather than a complete, closed and rigid system.

Little known to his contemporaries, kept away from the polemics of his time, little inclined to the life of the salons and badly received by the Revolution, Diderot had to wait until the end of the 19th century to receive all the interest and recognition of posterity in which he had placed part of his hopes. Some of his texts remained unpublished until the 21st century and the modern edition of his complete works started by the Parisian publisher Hermann in 1975 has not yet been completed."
