Description

La méridienne verte est la plus emblématique des créations qui marqueront l’an 2000. Imaginée par l’architecte Paul CHEMETOV, elle consiste en la plantation d’arbres tout au long du méridien de Paris entre Dunkerque et Barcelone. Ce monument végétal à l’échelle de la France nous incite à porter un regard nouveau sur le paysage. Il constituera un symbole fort du lien entre les hommes du Nord et du Sud qui trouvera son point d’orgue avec la fête du 14 Juillet.

Ce projet se veut un symbole d’universalité. Au XVIIIème siècle la mesure du méridien de Paris a permis de connaître pour la première fois le tour de la terre et d’établir le mètre étalon, qui est aujourd’hui la référence universelle.

Cette ligne historique entend célébrer la diversité du pays tout entier, associant les communes de toutes tailles, des paysages contrastés dans une œuvre commune. Elle traverse en France 337 communes, 20 départements et 8 régions.

La méridienne s’inscrit dans la durée, on plante de jeunes arbres d’essence séculaires pour les générations futures. Le 25 novembre 1998, Catherine Trautmann, ministre de la culture et de la communication procédait à la plantation des 9 premiers arbres de la méridienne verte à St Martin du tertre.

Description

The green meridian is the most emblematic of the creations that will mark the year 2000. Designed by the architect Paul CHEMETOV, it consists of planting trees all along the meridian of Paris between Dunkirk and Barcelona. This plant monument on the scale of France encourages us to take a new look at the landscape. It will constitute a strong symbol of the bond between the men of the North and the South which will find its point of organ with the festival of July 14.

This project is intended to be a symbol of universality. In the 18th century, the measurement of the meridian of Paris made it possible to know for the first time the circumference of the earth and to establish the standard meter, which is today the universal reference.

This historic line intends to celebrate the diversity of the entire country, associating municipalities of all sizes, contrasting landscapes in a common work. In France, it crosses 337 municipalities, 20 departments and 8 regions.

The meridian is part of the long term, we plant young trees of secular essence for future generations. On November 25, 1998, Catherine Trautmann, Minister of Culture and Communication, planted the first 9 trees of the green meridian in St Martin du Tertre.
