During the Ordovician Meteor Event, about 670 million years ago, the Earth was showered with asteroids. Several impacts from this event have been identified. At the time, this area was under a shallow sea, which eventually filled the crater with sediments. When the waters receded, the crater was almost completely obscured and was not discovered until 1991, by a geologist studying seismic data in search of fossil fuels. Oil was in fact discovered in the area, making this one of several oil-producing craters. This waymark is set at the Ames Astrobleme Museum, which provides both static and interactive exhibits about the site. The open-air museum is free and open to the public at all times.
