Within the Schoonselhof cemetery you will find Leopold de Wael's wife's (former mayor Antwerpen) grave in the middle of a roundabout in the cemetery. Lovely sculpture of an angle on the north side of the grave.

While walking through the Schoonselhof cemetery in Antwerpen, I noticed this grave. It is in the middle of a roundabout and about 4 meters high. It is the grave of Leopold de Wael's wife (more information below about Leopold de Wael). The grave is made from stone and the angel in front is made from bronze.

Inscription on the west side of the grave reads
NL: Graf van Mev. L.DeWael-Van Gend 19.1.1844 - 4.8.1887
EN: Grave of Mev. L.DeWael-Van Gend 19.1.1844 - 4.8.1887

Inscription on front side/north side of the grave reads

NL:
Antwerpen
aan Leopold de Wael
Burgemeester 1872-1892

EN:
Antwerp
to Leopold de Wael
Mayor 1872-1892

About Leopold de Wael:

" Léopold Charles Norbert de Wael (14 July 1823 – 17 August 1892) was a Belgian politician for the Liberal Party.

Biography

Leopold was a son of merchant Jhr. Charles-Henri de Wael (1787-1864) and Isabelle Vermoelen (1787-1867). In 1862 he married Fanny Van Gend (1844-1887) with whom he had five children.

De Wael was a provincial councilor of Antwerp from 1860 to 1864. In 1872 he was appointed mayor of Antwerp, which he remained until his death in 1892. In 1878 he was elected Liberal Member of Parliament for the Antwerp district, and was succeeded in 1880 by Eduard Osy de Zegwaart. He again became a Member of Parliament from 1882 to 1884, after which he was succeeded in that last year by Jean-Baptiste De Winter. From 1878 to 1880 he was Vice-President of the House."
