visit link) that says:"The Elvira Gate or Elvira Arch (Báb Ilbím) was the access point to the Alhacaba and Albayzín from the Medina Elvira road, and that is where its name comes from.
The Puerta de Elvira is a large protocol arch, its shape is a horseshoe with voussoirs. It is walled by another brick arch of the same layout, which in its key is highly transformed by horizontal courses, and which could have replaced some piece with the carving of a key and hand, characteristic symbols of Nasrid monumental doors.
The Puerta de Elvira, at the foot of Monaita , was joined by a stretch of wall that would ascend the Cuesta de Abarqueros . Its construction by the Zirid sultans dates from the beginning of the 11th century. Its origin could have been a complex formed by two doors in the shape of an elbow with an intermediate patio. French troops demolished its inner gate (the one that was locked) and its passageway, in order to facilitate rapid military deployment in the event of an uprising.
The Puerta de Elvira has undergone different transformations throughout its history, the most important being the one carried out in the reign of Yusuf I of the Nasrid dynasty. At this time it was formed as an autonomous fortress with four towers. Due to its importance and dimensions, it was the main gate of the city, due to its functions as main post and customs control. A Muslim cemetery extended from Puerta de Elvira, in the area where Campo del Triunfo is today .
At present, the exterior arch from the Nasrid period is preserved, flanked by two rammed earth towers, all topped by battlements, and the abutment on the north side, formed by three high brick arches that support the corresponding walkway.
The horseshoe arch, similar to those of the Puerta de la Justicia and Puerta de Bib-Rambla, is formed with voussoirs, which are sandstone slabs, an archivolt of the same type and chamfered stone jambs.
Throughout the 20th century, the Puerta de Elvira has undergone several restoration and consolidation works, since 2001 there has been a new intervention project on the gate and adjacent walls.
As a curiosity to mention that a few meters from the Puerta de Elvira were the Arab Baths of Hernando de Zafra or Casa de las Tumbas , one of the most important public baths in the neighborhood during the 13th and 14th centuries.
