Twee reusachtige figuren, bedekt met 10.000 bijen begroeten je bij Floriade Expo 2022. Bijen zijn belangrijk voor een goede balans tussen mens en natuur, zeker in de nabije toekomst. Beehold toont mens en bij in ultieme samenwerking als icoon voor de toekomst van de groene stad.

Kunstenaar Florentijn Hofman maakte Beehold als statement over de mens-natuur verhouding die in disbalans is: we hebben als mensheid een onzekere toekomst voor ons, en onze connectie met de natuur is grondig verstoord. Misschien zwaaien de twee figuren niet, maar gebaren ze om jouw aandacht te krijgen? Ook al is de bij klein, hij is echt onmisbaar. Toch zit de bij in het nauw: soorten verdwijnen en aantallen lopen terug, terwijl 80% van de planten die we eten voor bestuiving afhankelijk is van de bij. De bij is een symbool van onze connectie met en afhankelijkheid van de natuur, hij staat voor alles wat met klimaatverandering op het spel staat.

Misschien heb je haar al gevonden: tussen de 10.000 bijen is één bijenkoningin te vinden. Zij wordt omringt door vooral blije bijtjes, maar tussen de lachende bijen zijn honderden ongelukkige bijtjes te vinden, als voortekenen voor de onzekere toekomst van de natuur. De koningin is, net als bij de echte bij, net iets groter dan de rest. Lacht zij, of is ze juist somber over de toekomst?

Het kunstwerk verwijst naar ‘to behold’ (aanschouwen) en naar ‘to hold’ (vasthouden), omdat we bijen moeten behouden. Florentijn Hofman: “Het gaat over hoe we eerst ons zelf zien en dan pas de wereld om ons heen. Pas als je van dichtbij kijkt, zie je dat de gestaltes – of wellicht alleen hun huid – geheel uit bijen bestaan. Die dubbelheid weerspiegelt onze beperkte kijk op de wereld: zelfs bij het aanschouwen van duizenden bijen, herkennen we daar nog steeds in eerste instantie onze eigen mensensoort in. To behold gaat over afstand nemen van de situatie, uitzoomen om juist tot de kern te komen.”

Two giant figures, covered with 10,000 bees, greet you at Floriade Expo 2022. Bees are important for a good balance between people and nature, certainly in the near future. Beehold shows people and bees in ultimate collaboration as an icon for the future of the green city.

Artist Florentijn Hofman made Beehold as a statement about the imbalance between people and nature: we as humanity have an uncertain future ahead of us, and our connection with nature has been thoroughly disrupted. Maybe the two figures aren't waving, but are gesturing to get your attention? Even though the bee is small, it is really indispensable. Yet the bee is in trouble: species are disappearing and numbers are declining, while 80% of the plants we eat depend on the bee for pollination. The bee is a symbol of our connection and dependence on nature, it represents everything at stake with climate change.

You may have already found her: one queen bee can be found among 10,000 bees. She is surrounded by mostly happy bees, but among the smiling bees are hundreds of unhappy bees to be found, as omens for the uncertain future of nature. The queen, like the real bee, is slightly larger than the rest. Is she smiling, or is she gloomy about the future?

The artwork refers to 'to behold' (behold) and to 'to hold' (to hold), because we have to keep bees. Florentijn Hofman: “It's about how we see ourselves first and only then the world around us. Only if you look closely, you see that the figures – or perhaps just their skin – consist entirely of bees. This duality reflects our limited view of the world: even when looking at thousands of bees, we still initially recognize our own human species in them. To behold is about distancing yourself from the situation, zooming out to get to the core.”
