The Faroe Islands consist of 22 green islands and are located in the North Atlantic between Scotland and Iceland.
The islands are of volcanic origin and this gives the islands that distinctiveness, green hills, steep mountain sides and deep fjords are the view everywhere. The steep mountain sides facing the sea are habitats for various seabirds, for example puffins.
Small villages are located by the fjords and many Faroese make a living from fishing. The distinctive turf-roofed houses are seen everywhere.
Here are also many sheep, they walk around on the mountain sides and even on the roads and in the small villages. There are 70,000 sheep in the Faroe Islands and only 50,000 people. Grass and flowers are some of the only things that grow on the islands, for example no trees are seen.
In the capital Thorshavn is the parliament in the old town Reyn. Here are also houses from the 16th century.
The most important historical place in the Faroe Islands is Kirkjubøur. The bishop lived here in the Middle Ages and the village was the country's spiritual and cultural center
