Benny the Bengal stands watch outside Reed Gymnasium, but he truly is a paper tiger. This papier-mache sculpture was built by students in the early 1980s and covered with liquid cement.
Local newspapers say the ISU plans to create one or more bronze bengal tigers to replace this one as the official mascot tribute. According to most reports, Benny will stay put until age and weather cause him to deteriorate.
In 1921, Ralph H. Hutchison, the first director of physical education and athletics at ISU (then Idaho Technical Institute), chose the Bengal Tiger as the school's mascot in honor of his alma mater, Princeton. Since then, the school has undergone two name changes (University of Idaho-Southern Branch and the current Idaho State University) but the Bengal has stayed.
