« Le modèle s'appelait Saveria Grisoni ; elle venait de la région de Moltifao, poursuit Olivier Bianconi. En 1970, Saveria était la dernière habitante du quartier de l'Aghja. Malgré son grand âge, elle venait encore chaque matin dans le quartier de Merozzine pour attendre les marchands ambulants. Bien avant, aux premières heures du XXe siècle, avec l'assistance de Léon, un ami du village, elle avait quitté sa Corse natale pour connaître la fièvre de la vieille capitale. Léon-Charles Canniccioni (1879-1957) était artiste peintre issu de l'école dite d'Ajaccio. Comme il entretenait des relations amicales avec le sculpteur Louis Patriarche, il n'eut pas de difficulté à faire entrer Saveria au service de celui-ci. Dans les années 1950, Canniccioni jouissait d'une certaine renommée, notamment dans les milieux corses de la capitale. Ainsi, il mit certainement Patriarche en relation avec les commanditaires de la fameuse statue. La jolie Saveria de Moltifao, au service domestique du sculpteur, fut finalement choisie comme modèle. »

« L'administration municipale accueillait dans un petit cabanon de bois, un poste d'octroi qui servait à financer l'entretien des fortifications et les travaux d'utilité publique. Le terrassement nécessaire et l'aménagement de la place et l'érection de la statue entraîneront la perte d'un ancien cimetière situé dans les jardins autour de l'église Santa Maria del Borgo ou Santa Maria Vecchia (derrière les actuels bureaux de Corse-Matin).
