Originally built to house the schools of Forestry and Geology, the building continues to host similar studies, though under different monikers. Forestry, for example, remains Forestry, but Geoogical studies have branched into more specific aspects of the science, known as Earth Sciences, Earth Sciences-Physics (commonly termed geophysics) and Geological Studies. While much of both disciplines, Forestry and Geology, are still taught in the building, both have expanded to other buildings. Also, both offer undergraduate and graduate studies on campus.

To the lay person, probably the most interesting aspect of the building is the Quartermain Earth Science Centre, which highlights the beauty and excitement of geology in the form of exhibits, displays, programs and events.

Unfortunately, the Quartermain Museum currently remains closed due to COVID-19.
Quartermain Earth Science Centre
The Quartermain Earth Science Centre is located within the Earth Science Department in the Forestry & Geology building at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB. The museum offers interactive tours, educational activities and public events. Since its doors opened in June 2011, the public has been invited to celebrate geological discoveries in the Maritimes, across Canada, around the world and beyond. Building on UNB’s 180 years of geological education, the Quartermain Centre has had an impact on how we can think about our planet and the many fields within the Earth Sciences.

A Rockin’ Thank you to Dr. Robert Quartermain
The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton is home to the Quartermain Earth Science Centre thanks to a $1-million contribution by UNB alumnus and mining executive, Dr. Robert Quartermain. The museum was officially opened in June, 2011, and is free for the public. Located in UNB’s Forestry and Geology building, the centre includes dinosaur replicas, a large-scale display showing a journey to the centre of the earth, a working seismograph and a mineral showcase. It also houses a new teaching and computer lab suitable for fun inquiry based hands-on activities.

From 1976 to 1982, he worked for the Geological Survey of Canada and in private industry on mapping and exploration programs. After completing his M.Sc. at Queens, Dr. Quartermain joined Teck Resources and in 1985, was named president of Silver Standard Resources Inc., a position he held for 25 years, growing the company from a staff of two to a company with a market capitalization of $2 billion.
