More than 800 years ago, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, first arrived in Ireland. The re-establishment of the Order in Ireland under the title Irish Association of the Order of Malta took place in 1934. Before 1950, ambulance corps units were operating in Irish cities and towns.
