NL Bij het chimpansee-verblijf in Dierenpark Amersfoort staat een boomstronk met daarin een tableau ter gedachtenis aan de chimpansees Mike en Karibuna.

November 2020 was een hele zware maand voor het DierenPark Amersfoort. Niet alleen ging het park dicht vanwege de coronamaatregelen, er ontsnapten twee chimpansees uit hun verblijf. Mike en Karibuna kwamen tussen de bezoekers terecht en moesten noodgedwongen worden neergeschoten.

“Na de ontsnapping is in eerste instantie geprobeerd de chimpansees terug in hun verblijf te krijgen met voedsel. Bij een aantal apen is dit gelukt, bij twee chimpansees, Mike (55 jaar) en Karibuna (20 jaar), helaas niet”, staat in het verslag van het DierenPark. “De twee ontsnapte chimpansees gingen verder het park in en kwamen daarbij in contact met bezoekers. Medewerkers van het dierenpark waren door hun ontsnapping in acuut levensgevaar doordat de twee apen hen aanvielen. Om de levensgevaarlijke situatie te beëindigen, zijn de chimpansees neergeschoten met een vuurwapen conform het geldende veiligheidsprotocol.”

Na het incident, verzamelde de Facebookgroep Fans van DierenPark Amersfoort een inzamelingsactie om een monument voor de twee chimpansees te maken. In het DierenPark komt een herinneringshoek, waar de tegel te zien zal zijn.

November 2020 was a very tough month for the Amersfoort Zoo. Not only did the park close because of the corona measures, two chimpanzees escaped from their enclosure. Mike and Karibuna ended up between the visitors and had to be shot.

“After the escape, an attempt was initially made to get the chimpanzees back into their enclosure with food. This was successful with a number of monkeys, but unfortunately not with two chimpanzees, Mike (55 years) and Karibuna (20 years), "says the Animal Park report. “The two escaped chimpanzees continued into the park and came into contact with visitors. Employees of the zoo were in imminent danger because of their escape because the two monkeys attacked them. To end the life-threatening situation, the chimpanzees were shot with a firearm in accordance with the applicable safety protocol.”

After the incident, the Facebook group Fans of DierenPark Amersfoort collected a fundraiser to make a monument to the two chimpanzees. There will be a memorial corner in the DierenPark, where the tile will be on display.
