Langs de Ringkade te Nieuwegein zag ik een oud boenhokje. Deze hoort bij de boerderij van de Nedereindseweg 506. Dit is een boerderij uit het einde van de 19e eeuw.

Een boenhok is een klein schuurtje aan de waterkant, waarin melkgerei wordt gewassen. Vroeger had elke boerderij in het waterrijke deel van Holland wel een boenhok. De kleine schuurtjes boden de mensen gelegenheid om beschut tegen de weersomstandigheden dit dagelijks boenwerk te verrichten. Tegenwoordig zijn ze schaars geworden. Omdat de boenhokken veelal geen functie meer hadden zijn ze simpelweg in elkaar gestort of verwijderd. Boenhokken hadden veelal een sober uiterlijk, maar waren ook wel van baksteen gemaakt, met een keurig pannendak.

Zij komen vooral in het Utrechts - Zuid-Hollandse veenweidegebied, maar ook in andere veenweidegebieden, zoals Friesland. Er komen ook boenstappen of boenstoepen voor, die een vergelijkbare functie hadden, maar door het ontbreken van muren en een dak geen bescherming boden tegen de weersomstandigheden.

Along the Ringkade in Nieuwegein I saw an old washing cabin. This belongs to the farm of Nedereindseweg 506. This is a farm from the end of the 19th century.

A boenhok is a small shed on the water's edge, in which milk utensils are washed. In the past, every farm in the water-rich part of Holland had a boenhok. The small sheds offered people the opportunity to do this daily polishing job, sheltered from the weather conditions. Today they have become scarce. Because the barns often no longer had a function, they were simply collapsed or removed. Boenhokken often had a sober appearance, but were also made of brick, with a neat tiled roof.

They mainly occur in the Utrecht - South Holland peat meadow area, but also in other peat meadow areas, such as Friesland. There are also scrubbing steps or scrubbing pavements, which had a similar function, but offered no protection against the weather due to the lack of walls and a roof.
