The door on the east side, one of the doors through which you can enter the church, has this special doorknocker.
At first I thought it was a lion but when I studied the object more closely I found that unlikely. The nose clearly has more human features. The man's expression is far from friendly, which is why I called him an angry old man in the title.
The door faces the cemetery, perhaps that is the reason for this angry expression and is this a warning to the spirits of the dead not to enter the church. (the head also reminds you a bit of the old scrooge movie)

The door and also the knocker are mentioned in the description of the page for this national monument.
"At the east side of the chancel entrance framed with three statuettes and memorial stone above; on the door copper trigger; entrance framed on the south side, as well as the east one from 1650."

"The Salvius Church (nicknamed: d'Alde Wite = the old white) was originally dedicated to Saint Salvius. The Romanesque church, built in the 12th century, was renovated in 1504, with the choir and the south wall in particular being given a Gothic character. The single-aisled church is covered by a wooden barrel vault. The tower was built in 1544 with a clock cast by Geert van Wou from 1493. The south entrance has a pediment with a skull between two obelisks. Next to the entrance is a memorial stone in memory of Eise Eisinga. The pediment above the east entrance has three statues of the virtues, such as Caritas.

The organ from 1653 is the oldest church organ in Friesland and was made by the brothers Arnoldus and Tobias Bader. The organ was restored in the 19th century by Willem Hardorff and in the 20th century by Bakker & Timmenga. The church has seven pews and a large number of gravestones."
