Een Romeinse legionair is maandag (2017) onthuld op de rotonde van de Steekterweg met de Vinkebuurt in Zwammerdam. De soldaat markeert de toekomstige ingang van landgoed Hooge Burch. Op het terrein van zorginstelling Ipse de Bruggen bevindt zich Nigrum Pullum, het Limes-bezoekerscentrum.

In de jaren zeventig werden op die locatie bijzondere vondsten gedaan uit de Romeinse tijd. Koningin Juliana kwam hoogstpersoonlijk kijken naar de opgravingen van de zogeheten Zwammerdamschepen. Alphen aan den Rijn en Zwammerdam vormden mede De Limes, de noordelijke grens van het Romeinse Rijk in het verleden.

Het beeld is gemaakt van cortenstaal, dat langzaam op een geheel eigen wijze verroest.

A Roman legionary was unveiled on Monday (2017) at the roundabout of the Straatterweg with the Vinkebuurt in Zwammerdam. The soldier marks the future entrance to the Hooge Burch estate. Nigrum Pullum, the Limes visitor center, is located on the grounds of the Ipse de Bruggen care institution.

In the 1970s, special finds from Roman times were made at this location. Queen Juliana personally came to see the excavations of the so-called Zwammerdam ships. Alphen aan den Rijn and Zwammerdam also formed De Limes, the northern border of the Roman Empire in the past.

The statue is made of Corten steel, which rusts slowly in its own way.
