The MV William Carson was the first drive-on passenger ice breaking ferry to serve the Cabot Strait between North Sydney NS and Port Aux Basques NFLD. The 351 foot (107m) vessel was the flagship of the gulf ferry operations, with a capacity for 500 passengers and 104 cars with a displacement of 8,300 tons. On 03 June 1977 she struck a small iceberg 12 nautical miles (22km) off Battle Harbor NFLD and sunk in 500ft (150m) of water. There was no loss of life.
