The building was originally a Jesuit church, built from 1714 to 1746 by Geronimo Quezada y Garçon. After 1767 it was used for different purposes: tobacco warehouse, a theater, governmental offices. Then, in 1956, the Spanish architect Javier Borroso renovated the building for its current usage, commissioned by the dictator Rafael Trujillo.

Inside, this eternal flame can be seen, amongst the tombs of the major personalities of Dominican history.
