Het werk Barricade, dat Fernando Sánchez Castillo voor het Maximapark ontwierp, kan worden opgevat als een 'monument voor de democratie', een ode aan degenen die, waar ook ter wereld, in opstand kwamen tegen onrecht en onderdrukking. Het kunstwerk refereert aan verzetshaarden en bloedige strijd, maar ook aan traditionele monumenten waarin macht en triomf verheerlijkt worden – zoals ruiterstandbeelden of obelisken.

Barricade is gemodelleerd naar studentenopstanden uit 1968 zoals in Parijs en Turijn en vormt in het park ook een daadwerkelijke barricade op de voornaamste doorgangsweg (het beukenpad). Het werk is opgebouwd uit een Citroën 2CV, een Fiat 500, een Vespa scooter, autobanden, vlaggen, stenen en stukken hout - allen in brons gegoten. Door een speciale bewerking van het brons lijken sommige objecten levensecht.

Het dictatoriale verleden van Spanje onder Franco is van sterke invloed op Sánchez Castillo's werk, waarin thema's als onderdrukking, revolutie en bevrijding regelmatig terugkeren. In zijn uitdagende sculpturen en video’s wordt afgerekend met de erfenis van tirannen. Symbolen van macht, zoals bronzen adelaars en leeuwen, of meer dan levensgrote standbeelden van alleenheersers, worden door transformaties onschadelijk gemaakt. Daarbij gaat Sánchez Castillo te werk als een piraat: zijn drijfjacht naar de sporen van Franco’s dictatuur over Spanje is een wraakoefening op alle dictaturen, maar ook een zoektocht naar vrijheid.

In mei 1968 brak vanuit een studentenopstand een algemene staking uit over heel Frankrijk, de Parijse studentenrevolte genaamd. Ook in andere landen waren er grootschalige protesten. Al snel namen de gebeurtenissen bijna revolutionaire vormen aan, tot het protest uiteindelijk uitstierf na onderdrukking door de overheid. De manifestaties waren uniek omdat ze niet uitgingen van een bepaalde bevolkingsgroep, maar omdat ze etniciteit, cultuur, klasse en leeftijd overstegen.

De proteststakingen waren vooral gericht tegen de "oude maatschappij" en traditionele moraliteit, waarbij vooral het onderwijssysteem en werkgelegenheid bekritiseerd werden. In Parijs namen deze opstanden zulke enorme vormen aan dat er straatgevechten ontstonden tussen betogers en politie. President Charles de Gaulle hield een spoedvergadering om de onrust op te lossen en schreef uiteindelijk op 23 juni 1968 nieuwe parlementsverkiezingen uit. De protestacties namen af, maar tegen alle verwachtingen in scoorde de Gaulle hoger dan ooit tijdens de verkiezingen.

The work Barricade, designed by Fernando Sánchez Castillo for the Maxima Park, can be seen as a 'monument to democracy', an ode to those who, wherever in the world, rose up against injustice and oppression. The artwork refers to pockets of resistance and bloody struggle, but also to traditional monuments that glorify power and triumph – such as equestrian statues or obelisks.

Barricade is modeled after student uprisings from 1968 such as in Paris and Turin and in the park also forms an actual barricade on the main thoroughfare (the beech path). The work consists of a Citroën 2CV, a Fiat 500, a Vespa scooter, car tires, flags, stones and pieces of wood - all cast in bronze. Due to a special processing of the bronze, some objects appear lifelike.

Spain's dictatorial past under Franco has a strong influence on Sánchez Castillo's work, in which themes such as oppression, revolution and liberation regularly return. His provocative sculptures and videos deal with the legacy of tyrants. Symbols of power, such as bronze eagles and lions, or larger-than-life statues of rulers, are rendered harmless by transformations. Sánchez Castillo acts like a pirate: his chase for the traces of Franco's dictatorship over Spain is an act of revenge against all dictatorships, but also a quest for freedom.

In May 1968, a student uprising broke out in a general strike across France, called the Paris Student Revolt. There were also large-scale protests in other countries. Soon events took on an almost revolutionary form, until the protest finally died out after government suppression. The manifestations were unique because they did not start from a specific population group, but because they transcended ethnicity, culture, class and age.

The protest strikes were mainly directed against the "old society" and traditional morality, criticizing the education system and employment in particular. In Paris, these uprisings became so enormous that street fights broke out between protesters and police. President Charles de Gaulle held an emergency meeting to resolve the unrest and finally called new parliamentary elections on June 23, 1968. Protests subsided but, against all odds, de Gaulle scored higher than ever in the election.
