The Ägidienchurch was already mentioned as a chapel in 1110. After the destruction of the Krämerbrücke and the church in 1293, it was rebuilt as a stone structure and completed in 1325. In the Middle Ages, the ground floor was an open hall and served as a salesroom. After several changes of patronage until 1525, the church belonged to the monks of the Scots monastery and then to the merchant community. Worship ceased in 1615, the church was sold and partly used as a warehouse. There was a shop on the ground floor, the doorways of which were uncovered during renovation work. In 1927, the building was reacquired as a tenement and since its restoration from 1957 to 1960, it has once again been used as a place of worship by the Protestant Methodist Church. It is the oldest church in the world used by Methodists.

History of the EmK ( Evangelical Methodist Church ) in Germany:
Coming from England, the "Wesleyan Methodists" had already been active in Württemberg since 1831, first through Christoph Gottlob Müller (1785-1858). Emigrants who had made contact with Methodist churches in the USA became missionaries in Germany from 1848 onwards. They wanted to share their spiritual experiences with their fellow countrymen. Ludwig Sigismund Jacoby (1813-1874) worked for the American "Episcopal Methodist Church" in Bremen from 1849. From 1850 Johann Conrad Link worked for the "Evangelical Community" ("United Brethren Church", also a Methodist church) in Stuttgart. In 1897, the Wesleyan Methodists from England and the Episcopal Methodists from the USA finally united to form the "Methodist Church". Another merger took place in 1905. In that year, the Methodist Church was joined by other congregations that had come into being as a result of the work of Christan Bischoff (1829-1885). The "Church of the United Brethren in Christ" in Upper Franconia, Thuringia and West Prussia emerged from his work as the German branch of the "United Brethren of Christ". The main focus of Methodist work in Germany was not only in Württemberg and Bremen but also in Saxony, where Erhardt Wunderlich (1830-1895), who had returned from America, worked for the Methodist Episcopal Church. The encounter of the independent Free Churches with the state churches brought with it a host of problems. Despite difficult situations and many a dispute and hostility, Methodist evangelism gave rise to congregations in almost all German states. In addition, from 1919 onwards, the freedom of religion guaranteed for the first time in Germany by the Weimar Constitution was conducive to the expansion of the Methodist Church and the Protestant Fellowship.
