This is an old Spanish fort located in Puerto Plata, in the northern coast of Dominican Republic, which was used as a prison for several periods of its history.

This fort was built in the second half of the 16th century. Works started in 1564 and by 1577 the fort was concluded. It was involved in the Quasi War, an unofficial armed conflict between France and the USA.

Since 1965 it hosts a museu, It was renovated in 1974 and it opened as we now can see it in 1983. It's an advised visit. Inside there are a few historical exhibits and from the walls the visitor can enjoy excellent views all around.

It was used as a prison for several periods of its history but the most significant role in history was the captivity of the man who's considered the father of the nation by Dominicans. Juan Pablo Duarte, was incarcerated here in August 1844, after being arrested in Puerto Plata and before being sent to Santo Domingo for deportation.
