Mamoru Matsunaga was a judo sensei, considered the father of this modality in Dominican Republic. He was also the designer of the Japanese Garden in the National Botanical Gardens, in Santo Domingo.

This memorial is placed by the entrance of the Japanese garden and includes a picture of his face and a plaque with the following inscription:
