The monument is a Belgian national heritage monument. The register reads:
"The natural stone monument has an octagonal profiled pedestal of seven meters in diameter, with space for annual plants on the four corners. On this base is a four-sided obelisk with chamfered grooved corners, decorated at the bottom with sculpture in bronze high relief. Four life-size statues, each signed at the bottom right “E. VEREYCKEN” and set against a stele profiled at the bottom and stepped at the top, evoke the misery of war and the courage of the people. At the front is a soldier in full gear, drawing his sword. To the right stands an old naked man with his hands tied behind his back; he falls to his knees in sadness. The left side shows a mother in a long hooded cloak with a sleeping child tucked in, on the run. At the back stands a naked man, desperate, hands in hair"
