In 1279 is er al sprake van een kerkgebouw. Dit kerkgebouw zal een eenvoudig Romaans kerkgebouw zijn geweest waarin ook tufsteen verwerkt was. Van het huidige gebouw date¬ren de toren en het koor uit 1400-1450 en het schip en transept uit 1450-1500. Het koor van middeleeuwse kerken was gericht op het oos¬ten, naar Jeruzalem. De toren staat dan aan de westzijde. De van oorsprong een RK-kerk was gewijd aan St.Dionysius.

Op 26 augustus 1581 geven de Staten van Utrecht een plakkaat uit waarin, zoals dat toen genoemd werd, de exercitie van de Roomse religie verboden werd. Pas 1589 kwam in Harmelen de eerste predikant in de persoon van Ds. Jacobus Hardenberch. Het was niet altijd gemakkelijk om de van oorsprong RK-kerkgebouwen in te richten voor de protes¬tantse eredienst. Zie hiervoor de inrichting van de Hervormde kerk van Linschoten. In de Hervormde kerken van Harmelen en Montfoort is het opgelost door het koor van de kerk door een wand af te sluiten. De preekstoel staat in beide kerken tegen deze wand aan. In Harmelen is in het koor de consistorie.

In 1279 there was already a church in Harmelen. This church building would have been a simple Romanesque church building in which tuff was also incorporated. The tower and choir of the current building date from 1400-1450 and the nave and transept from 1450-1500. The choir of medieval churches was oriented to the east, towards Jerusalem. The tower is then on the west side. The originally Roman Catholic church was dedicated to St.Dionysius.

On August 26, 1581, the States of Utrecht issued a edict in which, as it was then called, the exercise of the Roman religion was prohibited. It was not until 1589 that the first pastor arrived in Harmelen in the person of Rev. Jacobus Hardenberch. It was not always easy to furnish the originally Roman Catholic church buildings for Protestant worship. See for this the layout of the Reformed Church of Linschoten. In the Reformed churches of Harmelen and Montfoort it was solved by closing off the choir of the church with a wall. The pulpit is against this wall in both churches. In Harmelen the consistory is in the choir.
