This obelisk is known by the locals as Obelisco Macho (male obelisk) to distinguish itself from another obelisk in Santo Domingo.

It was built in 1936 to commemorate the change of name of the city from Santo Domingo to Ciudad Trujillo, in honor to the dictator who led the country by then.

It is one of the few monuments built to praise Trujillo which resisted to the end of the regime. In 1996 it was painted by some Dominican artists. The theme is the Mirabal sisters, famous by their resistance to the dictatorship and killed by the regime.
