The Kleve Piano Summer draws guests from far beyond the city limits to Kleve in the summer months and revives the old spa splendor of the city. Outstanding pianists play in front of the wonderful backdrop of the forest garden, the rows of chairs are usually not enough to offer space for all the listeners: people like to lie down on the grass and listen to the open air classical music. Only the stage, which has had a rather provisional character for years , changing rooms, a chair store or even toilets that were open at least during the concerts — none. But now the city has drawn a line: there will be a new concert shell.

The new concert shell in the city's forest garden is estimated at around 300,000 euros. The old one will be completely demolished and a concrete floor will be poured for the new one.

The concert shell and the extension for the adjoining rooms are to be built in prefabricated parts, says Kleve's technical assistant Jürgen Rauer.

The new concert stage in the Fortsgarten should be finished as soon as possible - the tenders are now being tackled. Rauer estimates that construction can be completed by early August. In the meantime, a temporary stage will be set up.

"We decided on a new building in order to be able to solve the requirements of the future stage in a coherent design," says Jürgen Rauer. In fact, the new concert shell appears to be cast in one piece and that in the truest sense of the word: the outer shell of the building is cast from brown-red terracotta colored fair-faced concrete. "Patterns like matrices are laid in this concrete. It could be foliage based on the forest garden, it could also be notes - we're still open." The stage that encloses the shell is 60 square meters in size, in front of it there is a proscenium of another 36 square meters. The proscenium and the actual "stage house" are spanned by a light, seemingly floating roof that rests on a steel construction supported by narrow steel columns. The shell is in the same place as the old one, at the back it has been expanded to include the rooms that were so sorely missed. "We will set up the construction so that no trees have to be felled. We checked other locations, but rejected them again," says Rauer. Between the actual concert stage and the adjoining house for the ancillary rooms is a glass passage with an entrance for the artists and possible staff under a concrete roof. This is followed by a changing room and a chair store, plus two toilets, one of which is handicapped accessible.

The concert shell itself is lined with wood on the inside. In order to protect the interior of the house, the wall cladding can close the concert building like a large gate. "Because we want to make the building as vandal-proof as possible, the fair-faced concrete is also given an anti-graffiti coating," explains Jürgen Rauer. The steel structure that supports the floating roof can also accommodate loudspeakers and headlights if required."
