In the past Marlstone (Mergel) was mined in Limburg. Marlstone is a soft yellowstone, which is ideal for sculpting. The mines are no longer used, but you can enter the caves/mine area which has been transformed into a museum of art and sculpting.

According to the Mergelrijk website:
"At MergelRijk you go on a journey of discovery through the caves of Valkenburg and experience all the stories about caves and marl. The rich history of the marl caves comes to life along the way through beautiful marl and sand sculptures.

MergelRijk first takes you millions of years back in time to the origin of the marl. Then you will experience how the block breakers removed the marl from the mountain and thus the caves of Valkenburg were created. You will also discover everything for which the marl and caves were used in the past.

One of the highlights is a life-sized marl sculpture of 'the Night Watch'. Every visitor can also get to work on the way to make their own souvenir from a block of marl. How nice is that! This is only possible at MergelRijk!

A visit lasts about 1 hour."
