Memorial to the French soldiers who lost their lives in Berkvik during World War II
On the granite stone there is text in both French and Norwegian. The text is:
In memory of the French soldiers who fell at the Allied first landing during World War II.
Bergkvik-Elvegaar
13-05-1940
The French soldiers participated in the Allied forces in the battles in and around Narvik from April 9 to June 8, 1940. The battles took place both in the mountains and from the sea.
The fighting began on April 9, when the Germans occupied Narvik. On May 28, Narvik was recaptured by Allied forces.
The purpose of the German invasion was to secure supplies of iron ore from the Swedish mines in Kiruna and Gällivare which were shipped out to Narvik. The iron ore was of great importance to Germany's armaments industry.
