A general history of the Belgian / Dutch Border:

"Border with the Netherlands

After Belgium declared itself independent in 1830, it took a long time before the separation was officially recorded. On April 19, 1839, the Separation Treaty was signed in London. On August 8, 1843, this was followed by a treaty, concluded in Maastricht, on the marking of the border. This treaty is known as the Maastricht Convention. The day before, the border was demarcated between Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which was then linked to the Netherlands in a personal union. In the same year, the placing of cast-iron border posts was started, starting with number 1 at the Drielandenpunt in Vaals and ending with border post number 365 near Retranchement in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, all with the year 1843. Poles were placed on both sides of the river along the Maas. , always facing each other, with the same number. No poles were placed in the vicinity of Baarle-Hertog with Baarle-Nassau (but no numbers were reserved either). The border situation was too complex"

Specific about this location and border post 214/215:
"Right in the center, in front of the St. Remigius Church, is a boundary marker. This is a faithful copy of the official border posts and was placed here in 1976 to commemorate the official establishment of the border between the Netherlands and Belgium between border posts 214 and 215. This border post symbolizes all international intersections within the Baarles. Both numbers are stated on this border marker and the national lion is depicted on each side."
