The monument is part of the Kempense Klaprozen project.
"Kempense poppies includes all soldiers who died during the First World War (1914-1918) and who came from the Kempen municipalities of Balen, Dessel, Geel, Laakdal, Meerhout, Mol and Retie (region k.ERF) and the municipalities of Arendonk, Baarle- Hertog, Beerse, Hoogstraten, Kasterlee, Merksplas, Oud-Turhout, Ravels, Rijkevorsel, Turnhout and Vosselaar (Northern Kempen region).

By killed soldiers we mean those who died as a result of military actions, as a result of illness or accidents during the war years (both at the front, in captivity and the internees) and also those soldiers who died in the immediate post-war period as a result of injuries sustained during the war years. The civilian casualties are outside the focus of this project.

Determining the origin of the soldiers is less clear-cut. There is no problem for soldiers who live in their hometown all their lives, but what to do with those who move? Is someone who only stays in Mol for the first years of life still a Mollenaar? If they only move to Geel shortly before mobilization, are they then a Gelenaar?

Erfgoedcel k.ERF chose to start from the lists of names on the war memorials that are today in the relevant municipalities. These can by no means be interpreted as the definitive list of names, but they do give a picture of who the community considers 'their dead' at that moment. Usually these men were born and raised in the municipality or so strongly anchored in the municipality by their profession, long-term residence or family roots. Every soldier mentioned on these monuments gets a place on this website."
