Bij gebrek aan een eigen begraafplaats werden de overledenen van de Rooms Katholieke parochie begraven op de Algemene begraafplaats van de toenmalige gemeente Zierikzee. Alvorens tot begraven van een overleden parochiaan op deze begraafplaats werd overgegegaan, werd het stoffelijk overschot overgebracht naar de RK Kerk voor een "godsdienstige Christelijke beaarding". Op woensdag 14 februari 1877 (Asdag) werd door het kerkbestuur ruim 1 hectare moesland aan de Grachtweg aangekocht voor f 4.335,51 (een kleine € 2.000.-) met als doel om een gedeelte van dat land in te richten tot een Rooms Katholieke begraafplaats en het overige te verpachten.

Na inschrijving werd de aanleg van de begraafplaats uiteindelijk aangenomen voor een som van f 2.600,00 (een kleine € 1.200,00) en kon op 11 april 1881 de eerste spa de grond in. Op maandag 23 mei 1881 werd door de pastoor de eerste steen gelegd voor het huisje bestemd tot aankledingsplaats en lijkbewaring. Op dinsdag 13 december 1881 werd de Rooms Katholieke begraafplaats plechtig door de Zeer Eerwaarde Heer J.A. Eversteijn, deken van Middelburg en pastoor in Goes gewijd en gesteld onder de Heilige Barbara.

Het ronde perk, waarin het grote kruis staat, is bestemd voor de Heren Geestelijken vóór het kruis en voor de Eerwaarde Zusters achter het kruis. Het beeld van de Heilige Barbara geplaatst bij de ingang van de begraafplaats, werd in 1881 geschonken door mevr. de weduwe P. Schillemans, geboren Cornelia de Wit en heeft f 60,00 (ruim € 27,00) gekost.

In the absence of a cemetery of their own, the deceased of the Roman Catholic parish were buried in the General Cemetery of the then municipality of Zierikzee. Before burying a deceased parishioner in this cemetery, the remains were transferred to the RC Church for a "religious Christian attitude". On Wednesday, February 14, 1877 (Asdag) the church board purchased more than 1 hectare of wetland on the Grachtweg for f 4,335.51 (just under € 2,000.-) with the aim of converting part of that land into a Roman Catholic cemetery. and to lease the rest.

After registration, the construction of the cemetery was finally accepted for a sum of f 2,600.00 (just under € 1,200.00) and the first spa could go into the ground on 11 April 1881. On Monday, May 23, 1881, the pastor laid the foundation stone for the house intended for dressing and burial. On Tuesday, December 13, 1881, the Roman Catholic cemetery was solemnly opened by the Most Venerable Sir J.A. Eversteijn, dean of Middelburg and pastor in Goes ordained and placed under Saint Barbara.

The round field, in which the large cross is located, is intended for the clergy in front of the cross and for the venerable sisters behind the cross. The statue of Saint Barbara placed at the entrance to the cemetery was donated in 1881 by Mrs. the widow P. Schillemans, born Cornelia de Wit and cost f 60.00 (more than € 27.00).
