Zierikzee heeft als enige stad in Nederland het grote voorrecht nog drie van haar middeleeuwse poorten te bezitten, die vanaf de 16e eeuw vrijwel ongewijzigd zijn gebleven. Ook Kampen bezit nog drie poorten, maar die zijn in latere tijd sterk verbouwd. Het zijn herinneringen aan lang vervlogen tijden toen de stad zich moest kunnen verdedigen tegen de vijand. Van deze drie poorten is de Nobelpoort, die staat aan de noordzijde van de stad, de oudste. Dit kan worden afgeleid uit het gebruik van Doornikse steen aan het onderste gedeelte en het metselen van bakstenen van datzelfde gedeelte in zogenaamd Vlaams verband. Daarbij is er geen afwisseling van lagen stenen in de lengterichting van de muur. Maar daarentegen een afwisseling van stenen in de lengte- en diepterichting in iedere laag van het metselwerk.

De poort dateert uit het eerste kwart van de 14e eeuw. Na het zware beleg door de Vlamingen in 1304 werd de verdediging drastisch verbeterd. Onderdeel daarvan was de bouw van onder meer deze poort. Evenals de Zuidhavenpoort is ook de Nobelpoort hoog. Het bood verdedigers de gelegenheid vanuit de hoogte hun belagers te bespieden en te bestoken. Het is nog de tijd van vooral pijl en boog. Toen de kanonnen hun verwoestende invloed konden laten gelden, werden niet langer van zulke hoge poorten opgetrokken.

In het hoofdgebouw bevindt zich de poortdoorgang. Hierin zijn loodzware eikenhouten poortdeuren, voorzien van veel ijzerbeslag en ontelbare smeedijzeren nagels met grote koppen, gehangen. Ook in de Zuid- en Noordhavenpoort zijn de deuren nog aanwezig. Ze zijn allemaal geschilderd in de stadskleuren. Tot 1866 werden de stadspoorten 's-avonds gesloten.

Laatkomers kregen tegen betaling aan de poortwachter toegang via het klinket, het kleine deurtje in één van de poortdeuren. De laatste poortwachter heette Hubrecht de Voogdt.

Mocht de vijand erin slagen de deuren kapot te rammen, dan werd een valhek met scherpe punten neergelaten als een nieuwe hindernis. De sleuf in de vorm van twee eiken balken met ruimte ertussen, is nog zichtbaar. Tussen de balken zijn horizontale staven aangebracht. Daaruit valt af te leiden dat aan de boven- en onderzijde van het valhek horizontale verbindingen aanwezig waren. Door de afwezigheid van dwarsverbindingen tussen de spijlen van het valhek werd voorkomen dat de vijand het hek als klimrek zou kunnen gebruiken.

Zierikzee is the only city in the Netherlands that has the great privilege of still having three of its medieval gates, which have remained virtually unchanged since the 16th century. Kampen also has three gates, but they have been extensively renovated in later times. They are memories of times long gone when the city had to defend itself against the enemy. Of these three gates, the Nobel Gate, which stands on the north side of the city, is the oldest. This can be deduced from the use of Tournai stone in the lower part and the laying of bricks of the same part in a so-called Flemish bond. There is no alternation of layers of stones in the longitudinal direction of the wall. But on the other hand, an alternation of stones in the longitudinal and depth direction in each layer of the masonry.

The gate dates from the first quarter of the 14th century. After the heavy siege by the Flemish in 1304, the defense was drastically improved. Part of this was the construction of this gate, among other things. Like the Zuidhavenpoort, the Nobelpoort is also high. It gave defenders the opportunity to spy on and harass their attackers from above. It is still the time of mainly bow and arrow. When the cannons were able to exert their destructive influence, such high gates were no longer erected.

The gate is located in the main building. Heavy oak gates, with many iron fittings and countless wrought iron nails with large heads, have been hung in this. The doors are also still present in the Zuid- and Noordhavenpoort. They are all painted in the city colors. Until 1866, the city gates were closed at night.

Latecomers were given access for a fee to the gatekeeper through the latch, the small door in one of the gates. The last gatekeeper was called Hubrecht de Voogdt.

Should the enemy succeed in ramming the doors, a sharp-pointed portcullis was lowered as another obstacle. The trench in the form of two oak beams with space between them is still visible. Horizontal bars are arranged between the beams. It can be deduced from this that horizontal connections were present at the top and bottom of the portcullis. The absence of cross connections between the bars of the portcullis prevented the enemy from using the fence as a climbing frame.
