[FIN] Suurikokoinen muistokivi kertoo kahden palomiehen, Helge Laurenin ja Turkka Hurmeen, kuolemasta suuren tulipalon aiheuttamassa räjähdyksessä. Se tapahtui elokuun 12. päivänä vuonna 1955 Liedon Sikilän kylässä Mäen tilalla. Turun Piirin Palopäällystöyhdistys lahjoitti muistomerkin ja huolehtii sen vaalimisesta. Kiveen kaiverretun kuvan on suunnitellut taiteilija Voitto Vikainen.

Kahden vapaaehtoisen pelastajan matka päättyi Sikilän kylässä Liedossa sijaitsevalle Mäen maatilalle elokuun 12. päivänä vuonna 1955. Liedon VPK sai hälytyksen klo 14.50. kun tilan karja- ja puimalarakennuksen katolla havaittiin savua. Paikalle saapui apuvoimia Turun suunnasta, ensimmäisenä Maarian VPK:n säiliöauto. Pelastajien joukko täydentyi koko ajan. Vaikka tilanne oli vaikea, näytti siltä, että päärakennus voitaisiin pelastaa. Urhoollisia miehiä hääri aivan tulirajassa. Yhtäkkiä tapahtui valtava räjähdys ja polttava liekki leimahti yli pihamaan. Ilmassa sinkoili esineitä, myös järeitä hirsiä. Kun pahin jyrinä oli tauonnut, ryntäsivät pelastajat takaisin pelastustöihin.

Ensimmäiset loukkaantuneet palomiehet saatiin autoihin ja suunnaksi otettiin Turun keskussairaala.
Pihalta löydettiin makaamasta Maarian VPK:n palomiehet Helge Lauren ja Turkka Hurme.

Paikallaolijat saivat heidät nopeasti kohti sairaalaan, mutta oli liian myöhäistä. Räjähdyksen syyksi selvisi asuinrakennuksen leivinuunin päälle unohtunut vanha kantopommipaketti nalleineen.

Palomiehet saivat viimeisen leposijansa Maarian kirkkomaalta Liedon kunnan kustannuksella. Kaikki Turun alueen VPK:t sekä tuhatpäinen yleisöjoukko jättivät jäähyväiset näille vapaaehtoisille sankareille.


[EN] The large memorial stone tells of the deaths of two firefighters, Helge Lauren and Turkka Hurme, in an explosion caused by a large fire. It took place on August 12, 1955 in the village of Sikilä in Lieto on the Mäki farm.

Suddenly a huge explosion occurred and a burning flame flashed over the yard. There were objects thrown in the air, including heavy logs. After the worst rumble had broken, rescuers rushed back to the rescue work. The first injured firefighters were taken to cars and taken to Turku Central Hospital. Helge Lauren and Turkka Hurme, firefighters of Maaria VPK, were found lying in the yard.

Firebrigade quickly got them towards the hospital, but it was too late. The cause of the explosion was an forgotten old tree stump bomb package with ignition parts, on top of a baking oven in a residential building. Firefighters received their last resting place from St. Mary's Church Land at the expense of the municipality of Lieto. All the VPKs in the Turku area and a crowd of thousands of people said farewell to these volunteer heroes.
