Tasmanians are celebrating the fifth Ashes Test being played in Hobart for the first time ever.

People began queuing outside Bellerive Oval early to secure the best seats before the first ball at 3:30pm. Some have travelled from across the state to attend, but other cricket fans are concerned about potential COVID cases.

In a show of support for Tasmania's first Ashes test, prominent Hobart landmarks will be lit up in green and gold until next week, including the Town Hall, the Rose Garden Bridge, Franklin Square fountain and the Elizabeth Street mall.
