De straat Helschriksel loopt van de Lomstraat in westwaartse richting tot aan het Maasschriksel/Lichtenberg, en kruist halverwege de Kwietheuvel. De naam is in twee delen te splitsen, namelijk hel en schriksel. Hel verwijst naar een helling, wat doet vermoeden dat de straat hoger lag dan het omliggende gebied. Schrikkelen was vroeger een Venloos woord voor "voorbij gaan aan". Het Helschriksel gaat dus voorbij aan een lager gelegen gebied.

De naam Helschriksel komt voor het eerst voor in de Stadsrekeningen van 1353. In die tijd was de spelling nog Schrixel, waarmee zowel deze straat als het Maasschriksel werd bedoeld. Op de zuidwesthoek met het Maasschriksel werd in de 15e eeuw de Sint-jacobskerk gebouwd. Op de hoek ertegenover (Helschriksel/Lichtenberg) lag lange tijd het armenkerkhof. Aan de straat lag de armenschool, die aanvankelijk in 1831 werd gesticht in het Ald Weishoès. Deze school werd in 1883 gesloten.

The Helschijnsel street runs from the Lomstraat in a westward direction to the Maasvlakte/Lichtenberg, and crosses the Kwietheuvel halfway through. The name can be divided into two parts, namely hell and terror. Hel refers to a slope, suggesting that the street was higher than the surrounding area. Schrikkelen used to be a Venless word meaning "to pass by". The Hell Terror thus passes by a lower area.

The name Helschriksel appears for the first time in the City Accounts of 1353. At that time the spelling was still Schrixel, which meant both this street and the Maasvlakte. In the 15th century, the Sint-Jacobskerk was built on the southwest corner of the Maasvlakte. For a long time the poor cemetery was located on the opposite corner (Helschijnsel/Lichtenberg). On the street was the school for the poor, which was initially founded in 1831 in the Ald Weishoès. This school was closed in 1883.
