Park emblemThe Sanabria Lake Natural Park was created in 1978 with the main objective of preserving the morphology that the Quaternary glaciers carved in its rocks, the purity of the waters, the richness of its flora and the diversity of its fauna, very rich in amphibian species: frogs, toads, salamanders and newts.

It occupies an area of 22,365 hectares, and within its limits is the largest glacial lake in the Iberian peninsula (368.5 hectares), as well as several lagoons scattered throughout the mountains and different vestiges of the glacial phenomenon: embedded valleys, moraines, canyons, etc.

It was declared a " Natural Site of National Interest " according to a ministerial order of the Ministry of Agriculture on February 7, 1946. " Picturesque place " in 1953. And Natural Park, according to Decree 3.061 / 78, in 1978 .

The altitude of the park varies between 997 meters on the shores of the lake, up to 2,124 meters at the peak of Peña Trevinca. It is a magnificent place to study the action of glaciers on the ground.
FLORA AND FAUNA
Natural ParkThe most abundant forests in the surroundings of Lake Sanabria are those formed by the Pyrenean oak. There are also some interesting holly and yew patches, while birches and alders are abundant on the banks of the mighty rivers that descend from the peaks or communicate with each other the different lagoons located inside the Natural Park.

The diversity of species characterizes this ecosystem located on the same border between the humid and temperate zones. Oak forests coexist with birch and willow trees, as well as holly and yew trees, among large expanses of scrub. On the other hand, the abundance of lagoons, springs and streams allows the existence of peat bogs, a true rarity in these latitudes. Ash, willow and chestnut trees also abound.

As you gain height, the forest is replaced by a thicket of scabonales, cambronales and heaths. The famous endemisms are also found in Sanabria: the carqueixa sanabresa and the geranium bohenicum.

Large presence of animals: rectiles, rodents, more than 76 species of birds and 17 of large mammals. Among all of them, the gray partridge, the short-toed eagle and the wolf stand out.
Mill in Rio TeraHere, too, they take shelter: roe deer, weasels, badgers, wild boars, hares, rabbits, hedgehogs, squirrels, bobcats, golden eagles, otters (emblem of the park), the bocage lizard and the Seoane viper, and fish such as the Escalo or the famous sanabresa trout ... are some of the many species that inhabit this natural space, which has been protected today since 1978.
