Karel van der Heijden (1826-1900) vertrok in 1841 als soldaat naar Indië. Daar maakte hij in het koloniale leger snel carrière. Bij de slag bij Samalangan in Atjeh op Sumatra werd zijn oog beschadigd. Daarmee verwierf hij de bijnaam ‘Generaal Eenoog’. In 1878 werd hij benoemd tot gouverneur en militair bevelhebber in Atjeh. Wegens zijn verdiensten in Atjeh werd hij in 1880 bevorderd tot luitenantgeneraal. Uitzonderlijk is dat hij drie maal onderscheiden is in de Militaire Willems Orde. Hij vertrok in 1881 naar Nederland. In 1887 werd hij op verzoek van koning Willem III commandant van Bronbeek. Daar was geen moeite hem te veel en voerde hij veel verbeteringen en moderniseringen door. Hij overleed op Bronbeek in januari 1900 en werd onder grote belangstelling begraven op Moscowa.

Oud-militairen van het KNIL, de Koninklijke Marine en hun weduwen boden de Van der Heijdenbank op 12 juli 1963 aan Bronbeek aan ter gelegenheid van het eeuwfeest. Op de rugleuning zijn aangebracht: het wapen van Arnhem (dubbele adelaar, links), het KNIL-voortrekkersinsigne 1945-1946 (gekroond monogram NIL, midden) en de aanbiedingsplaqueUe (rechts). De adelaar en het bronzen reliëf van Van der Heijden door Johannes C. Wienecke (1872-1945) zijn afkomstig van het eerste Van der Heijdenmonument, dat van 1903 tot 1963 op een heuvel aan de rand van het Arnhemse park Klarenbeek heeft gestaan.

Karel van der Heijden (1826-1900) left for the Indies in 1841 as a soldier. There he quickly made a career in the colonial army. His eye was damaged during the battle of Samalangan in Aceh on Sumatra. This earned him the nickname "General One-Eyed". In 1878 he was appointed governor and military commander in Aceh. Because of his merits in Aceh he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1880. It is exceptional that he has been decorated three times in the Military William Order. He left for the Netherlands in 1881. In 1887 he became commander of Bronbeek at the request of King Willem III. No effort was too much for him there and he carried out many improvements and modernizations by means of. He died at Bronbeek in January 1900 and was buried with great interest at Moscowa.

Former soldiers of the KNIL, the Royal Netherlands Navy and their widows presented the Van der Heijdenbank to Bronbeek on 12 July 1963 on the occasion of the centenary. The arms of Arnhem (double eagle, left), the KNIL Voortrekkers insignia 1945-1946 (crowned monogram NIL, center) and the presentation plaque (right) are affixed to the backrest. The eagle and the bronze relief of Van der Heijden by Johannes C. Wienecke (1872-1945) come from the first Van der Heijden monument, which stood on a hill on the edge of the Arnhem park Klarenbeek from 1903 to 1963.
