In 1823 a synagogue was built here. For many years it was a place of worship for the Jewish community. Now it is a concerthall. On the bridge to the synagogue, you can read the words "Synagogue Bridge" (Synagoge Brug in NL)

"Already 800 years ago there are signs of Jewish life in 's-Hertogenbosch; this makes this Jewish community the oldest in the northern Netherlands. The long period between that past and the present has been described by several historians. Historiography shows that the city had had Jewish burgesses since the early 18th century; however, that burghership was granted quite arbitrarily by the city government. This arbitrariness came to an end in 1796, the Batavian Republic, when all Dutch residents - including the Jews - obtained full civil rights.
Before and after that year the city had several house synagogues - the word synagogue comes from the Greek and derived from Sun Ago, which means 'to gather'. A really big 'house of worship' did not come until 1823 when Mr. Bernardus Hartogensis had a synagogue built on the plot "De Oude Munt" belonging to him to De Mortel, which he loaned to the Jewish community.
In 1886 the building - meanwhile donated to the Jewish community - was radically renovated under the direction of architect I. Gosschalk. The detached complex was hidden from view in 1937 when a row of houses was erected in front of the facade. Until then, the Dieze passed in front of the synagogue; housing from the 1930s put an end to this beautiful cityscape. The houses span the river."
