Die Ravensberger Spinnerei wurde 1855–1857 erbaut. Eingerichtet, geplant und in den ersten Jahrzehnten geleitet wurde das Unternehmen von Ferdinand Kaselowsky. Im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert war sie eine der größten Flachsspinnereien Europas. Durch den Strukturwandel in den 1960er Jahren musste die Spinnerei ihren Betrieb stark einschränken, 1974 schließlich komplett aufgeben.
Die Stadt Bielefeld hatte das Gelände bereits 1968 erworben und plante dort eine großzügige Straßenkreuzung als Teil eines „autogerechten“ Verkehrskonzepts. Diesem Vorhaben wäre unter anderem das schlossähnliche Hauptgebäude zum Opfer gefallen. Eine Bürgerinitiative konnte dies nach jahrelangen Protesten verhindern; der Komplex blieb als Industriedenkmal erhalten. Die aufwendige Sanierung des Hauptgebäudes, in das 1986 die Volkshochschule einzog, wurde mit dem europäischen Denkmalspflegepreis ausgezeichnet. Mit den hinzugekommenen Einrichtungen hat sich das Gelände zu einem kulturellen Schwerpunkt der Stadt entwickelt.

The Ravensberger spinning mill was built between 1855 and 1857. The company was set up, planned and managed in the first decades by Ferdinand Kaselowsky. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of the largest flax mills in Europe. Due to the structural change in the 1960s, the spinning mill had to severely curtail its operations and finally give up completely in 1974.
The city of Bielefeld had already acquired the site in 1968 and was planning a large intersection there as part of a "car-friendly" traffic concept. Among other things, the castle-like main building would have fallen victim to this project. A citizens' initiative was able to prevent this after years of protests; the complex was preserved as an industrial monument. The extensive renovation of the main building, into which the adult education center moved in 1986, was awarded the European Monument Preservation Prize. With the addition of facilities, the site has become a cultural focus of the city.
