The coat of arms for Russell Joseph McVinney, fifth Bishop of Providence (1948-1971), is mounted to north of the main entrance on the east side of the Diocese of Providence Chancery Office Building in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the first native of Rhode Island to serve as head of the Diocese of Providence.
The square plaque is fully covered in bas relief carving. This official blazon combines the arms of the Diocese of Providence with the personal arms of the bishop. As described on the Heraldry of the world wiki: "The personal arms of the Bishop are based upon his devotion to Our Lady of Providence and St. Joseph, his Patron Saint. Our Lady is represented by her flower, the lily; St. Joseph, by the carpenter's triangle. The cross symbolizes the Faith, the anchor of Hope echoes the Bishop's motto. The motto means 'Mary, Mother of Hope.'"
