“De onderste verdieping van het voormalige stadshuis van Woerden werd gebouwd in 1501, voor een bedrag van 450 gulden. Eerder stond op dezelfde plaats een houten optrek met rieten dak, dat ook als 'raadhuis' werd gebruikt. In eerste instantie werd het gebouw alleen gebruikt voor bijeenkomsten, pas in 1538 nam een secretaris betrekking in het gebouw als kantoor, en werd het meer een stadhuis zoals we het nu kennen. Het gebouw had toen wel een zolder. In 1601 werd hier een verdieping opgebouwd, met hierin een groot raamwerk met zes gekoppelde houten kruiskozijnen. In 1889-1890 is de zeskantige traptoren gerestaureerd. Het gebouw bevat een steen met het jaartal 1616, deze is echter afkomstig uit de eerder gesloopte "Rietvelderpoort". Toen in 1889 de gemeenteraad verhuisde naar een nieuw gebouw aan de Westdam, kreeg het gebouw tot 1933 de functie van kantongerecht. Sinds 1933 is het gebouw in gebruik als gemeentemuseum.

In het Stedehuys is het stadsmuseum van Woerden gevestigd. De stichting Stadsmuseum Woerden is opgericht in 1995. Het museum organiseert wisselende kunsttentoonstellingen, meestal gericht op het Nederlandse landschap algemeen en dat van het Groene Hart in het bijzonder. Het Stadsmuseum bezit schilderijen van de Haagse School en werk van Woerdense kunstenaars, zoals Leo Gestel, Herman van Swanevelt, Cornelis Vreedenburgh en Jan Kriege. Ook toont het museum voorwerpen uit de Romeinse tijd, toen in Woerden een castellum aanwezig was, en verschillende bodemvondsten, zoals het Frankische Zwaard van Woerden.”

“The bottom floor of the former city hall of Woerden was built in 1501, at a cost of 450 guilders. Previously on the same site was a wooden structure with a thatched roof, which was also used as a 'town hall'. Initially the building was only used for meetings, only in 1538 a secretary took up office in the building, and it became more of a town hall as we know it today. The building had an attic at the time. In 1601 a floor was built here, containing a large framework with six linked wooden cross frames. The hexagonal stair tower was restored in 1889-1890. The building contains a stone with the year 1616, but this comes from the previously demolished "Rietvelderpoort". When the city council moved to a new building on Westdam in 1889, the building was given the function of subdistrict court until 1933. Since 1933 the building has been used as a municipal museum.

The city museum of Woerden is located in the Stedehuys. The Stadsmuseum Woerden foundation was established in 1995. The museum organizes changing art exhibitions, usually focusing on the Dutch landscape in general and that of the Green Heart in particular. The City Museum owns paintings by the Hague School and work by Woerdense artists, such as Leo Gestel, Herman van Swanevelt, Cornelis Vreedenburgh and Jan Kriege. The museum also shows objects from Roman times, when a castellum was present in Woerden, and various artefacts, such as the Frankish Sword of Woerden.”
