About the cemetery:
"The General Cemetery Crooswijk is a cemetery in Rotterdam, in the Crooswijk district. The cemetery is located on a bend of the Rotte, on the left bank. She was commissioned in July 1832. The cemetery was not ready then, but due to a cholera epidemic, Rotterdam had a large number of dead to bury.
Until the nineteenth century it was the custom that the dead were buried in and around churches. In 1827, burial within built-up areas was prohibited. The Rotterdam city architect Pieter Adams therefore designed a new cemetery on the grounds of the Huis te Krooswijck country estate. A neoclassical entrance gate was designed on the Rotte. A new entrance on Kerkhoflaan has been in use since 1915.
When the Walloon church in Rotterdam was demolished in 1922, the remains of those buried there were transferred to this cemetery in Crooswijk. There is a tombstone in the cemetery for this.
After the Laurenskerk was bombed in 1940, mortal remains and tombstones were also transferred from there to Crooswijk Cemetery.
Crooswijk Cemetery has a separate section set up for burials of the strongly increased Muslim population. Here the dead can be buried within 36 hours.
The weeping trees in the park symbolize grief. They are recognizable by the hanging branches. Thus there is the weeping beech, the weeping beech, the weeping willow and the weeping birch.
The Crooswijk General Cemetery is a national monument."
