When iron pyrite is buried deep within earth, without access to both water and air, everything is swell. When a mine is dug and allows the pyrite to mix with water and air, toxic elements are formed. The path of the water is now being guided to reduce this toxic formation.

The contents of this kit allow the visitor to test for iron content and pH at the beginning and at the end of the water's flow through the system. This shows whether the system is working to clean the water or not.

Scientific Principle(s) being demonstrated: The tests performed show whether the abandoned mine drainage filtration system is working to remove toxic elements from the water. Briefly explain if the experiment was effective for you. Could it have been better?: We used the kit provided. Our readings for iron at the start were quite high, and much lower as the water discharged into the creek. The pH was also more desirable at the discharge. When is the apparatus/experiment available to the public: dawn to dusk
